Rhin-o-tuff Hd7000 Heavy Duty Interchangeable Die Modular Binding Punch Review

Overview:

The Rhin-O-Tuff HD7000 is a heavy duty interchangeable die binding punch that is designed for print shops, binderies, copy shops, in-plant printers and professional organizations.
This machine is designed to allow users to quickly and easily change punching patterns for creating documents with different binding styles. In fact there are more than twenty different hole-patterns to choose from.
The HD-7000 is known throughout the graphic arts industry for its heavy duty construction, excellent productivity and versatile set of features.

Strengths / Features:

The HD7000 offers the ability to punch an average of 41 sheets per lift between all of the most common hole-patterns. It can punch as many as 55 sheets of paper per lift using 3-hole and Velobind hole-patterns and as few as 30 sheets for spiral coil binding. These punching capacities are excellent and are some of the best in the industry. In fact, the only machine that can punch more sheets at one time is the HD7700 which is a heavier duty version of this machine.
This machine has a legal sized punching throat. All of the dies for the HD-7000 are capable of punching a fourteen inch legal sized sheet of paper. This provides great flexibility for organizations that occasionally need to punch legal sized paper. However, all of the dies used by this machine also have fully disengageable punching pins and open throats. This means that this machine can be used to punch virtually any length of document up to twenty eight inches in length (sheets longer than 14″ will require a two step punching process).
The thing that sets the HD7000 apart from the HD6500 is the Rhino Tuff quick change die system. This system allows users to switch punching patterns in less than thirty seconds by simply releasing the locking levers and sliding the die out of the system. You don’t have to loosen screws or other fasteners to change the dies.

]]>

This machine is designed to allow users to bolt their pieces of finishing equipment to the top of the machine. Using special kits it is possible to attach a comb opener, coil inserter or wire closer to the top of this punch. You can even attach a special die holder that will store your extra punching dies when you aren’t using them.
Like all of the machines built by Rhino Tuff this machine is built out of heavy duty metal components. The HD-7000 is constructed for commercial use in high volume punching applications. It comes with a one year warranty on both the dieset and the machine and is built to last for years without the need for maintenance.
The HD7000 uses a vertical punching throat. The vertical throat allows operators to use the throat of the machine to help align their documents for punching. Some users prefer this type of design to a horizontal punch.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

The HD7000 has many of the same features as the HD7700. However, in order to save the consumer money Rhino Tuff replaced the motor with a smaller and made the die sets smaller. For the small difference in price between the two machines many users will find that the upgrade to the HD-7700 Ultima is worthwhile. It offers a larger punching capacity, heavier duty diesets and a larger more durable punching motor.
The HD-7000 punch is designed for industrial punching applications inside binderies, copy shops and printing facilities. With that in mind, Rhino Tuff has given this machine an industrial look and feel. For dedicated operators this shouldn’t be a problem. However, inside an office environment this machine is more difficult to use and set up than similar punching machines from GBC.
Although the HD7000 is technically capable of punching more sheets than many other punches on the market the quality of the paper punching is sacrificed in the process. Unfortunately this is the case for most of the Rhino Tuff binding punches. In testing this machine I found that punching more than twenty to twenty five sheets at a time resulted in jagged holes and pages that were fused together. This affected the finished look and functionality of the documents that I was binding.
The quick change die system that is used on this machine is certainly a lot easier to use than the system included on the HD6500. However, in comparing the process for changing dies on this machine and the process used by the GBC modular binding punches, the die sets were much easier to change on the GBC machines. I also do not like the retaining clip system used by these machines to keep the punching pins locked into the die. It makes pulling pins for punching custom sized sheets difficult.

Recommendation:

The HD-7000 is an excellent machine for users that need a heavy duty modular binding punch and don’t have the money in their budget for either the GBC Magnapunch or the Rhino Tuff HD7700.
The legal sized punching throat, excellent punching capacity, heavy duty construction and quick die change system make this machine an excellent choice for printers, binderies, copy shops and large organizations.
However, this machine has a smaller motor than the HD7700 and is not as easy to use as the GBC Magnapunch. Still, it is a solid machine with a great set of features offered at an excellent price point.

Rhin-o-tuff Od4000 Interchangable Die Modular Binding Punch Review

Overview:

The OD4000 is the smallest electric interchangeable die binding punch that is offered as part of the Rhino Tuff line of binding equipment.
This punch is designed for small and medium sized organizations that need a high quality electric punch that is capable of punching several different binding styles.
The OD-4000 is not designed for high volume production environments but instead is meant as a punching solution for organizations that are tired of using tedious manual binding punches.
This machine offers the ability to punch a number of different hole patterns but is priced competitively enough that many users choose to purchase it for punching a single hole pattern. These users then have the flexibility to upgrade their machine by simply purchasing another die set in the future.

Strengths / Features:

The OD-4000 uses eleven inch punching dies that are built with an open throat design. This is great for organizations that primarily need to bind letter size or smaller documents. However, users who occasionally need to bind legal sized sheets can still use this punch by simply using the open throat design along with a two step punching process.
The OD4000 comes with one standard punching die of your choice when you purchase it new. There are currently twelve different standard die sets for this machine and a number of custom dies are also available. You can choose from dies for comb binding, spiral coil binding, twin loop wire, Velobind and 3-hole punching. This provides a huge amount of flexibility and allows for organizations to easily add a punching style at any time as needed.
One of the great things about this machine is the price point. The OD-4000 has a price tag that is similar to many fixed die modular punches or all in one electric desktop binding machines. However, this machine offers a superior level of productivity and versatility when compared to these other products.

]]>

The OD-4000 is designed to allow you to attach a spiral coil inserter to the side of the machine or bolt your finishing equipment to the top of the punch. This helps organizations to conserve space while creating their own customized binding experience. This punch is designed to be combined with a coil inserter, wire closer, comb opener or an automatic paper selector. Choose the combination that works best for your companies needs.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

Although this is a decent quality electric punch it has a fairly limited punching capacity. It is rated for punching up to seventeen sheets of paper at a time. However, depending on the punching pattern that you are using it may even end up being less than this. Users who need to bind small books and light volume users will probably be fine with this punching capacity. However, users who need to create larger sized documents or need to create a number of documents quickly should probably opt for a punch with a larger capacity.
The OD-4000 provides the ability to change punching patterns by simply replacing the punching die set. This machine uses the Rhino Tuff Ez change die system which holds the die in place using two bolts. You need to loosen these two bolts in order to change the punching pattern. Changing punching patterns takes less than two minutes which isn’t too bad. However, users who need to change patterns more than once or twice a day may want to look at a punch with an easier to use die change mechanism.
This machine is simply a binding punch. Depending on the type of binding that you want to do, you will need to purchase a piece of finishing equipment to work alongside this machine. For plastic comb binding you will need a comb opener. For double loop wire binding you will need a wire closer. For spiral coil binding you will need a coil inserter. It is important to remember to budget appropriately for one of these machines in order to get the most out of your punch.
Although it is possible to bolt pieces of Rhin-O-Tuff finishing equipment to the top of the machine it can be fairly difficult to and time consuming to do so. You will need to purchase a special connector kit to attach the two pieces of equipment. The first time that I tried to attach one of these punches to a wire closer it took me between 45 minutes and an hour. However, you might be able to do it faster than that if you are good with a screwdriver.
The Rhin-O-Tuff OD4000 is built well and isn’t very hard to use. However, it has the same industrial look that is common to the Rhino Tuff line of punches. That is fine, except this machine is not an industrial punch and is really designed to use in an office environment. It would be nice to see Rhino Tuff update the design of this punch so that it would look a little bit more stylish and contemporary for use in a professional office space.

Recommendation:

The Rhino Tuff OD-4000 is an excellent machine for a small to medium sized office that is looking for a high quality electric binding punch.
It provides the ability to change punching patterns for binding documents with multiple binding styles. However, it is priced reasonably enough that it is a good fit for organizations that only do one type of binding but want the ability to possibly upgrade or change in the future.
This machine is easy to use, fairly compact and even allows you to bolt your finishing equipment onto the punch in order to save space.
It would be nice to see a slightly larger punching capacity and a more contemporary design. However, the OD4000 has its place in the market and will do a good job for light to moderate binding applications.

Reviewing the Swingline ProFile Desktop 3-4 Hole Punch

It might seem that there’s nothing new when it comes to hole punches. After all, a hole punch is a hole punch, right? Don’t jump to conclusions just yet because Swingline, a leader in the stapler and hole punch market, has a great new hole punch that offers some previously unseen features. The Swingline ProFile hole punch is a breakthrough machine that can punch both letter- and legal-sized paper, eliminating the need for separate hole punches if you often work with both sizes of paper. And since this hole punch is from Swingline, you can be confident that this unit is high-quality despite its low price.

The Swingline ProFile hole punch offers a new and innovative way to punch your documents. This unit has four punching heads which makes it capable of punching both letter- and legal-sized paper. The ProFile can punch up to 20 sheets of 8.5″ x 11″ paper, and when it’s used with legal-sized paper, it can handle up to five sheets. The ProFile punches four holes in legal-sized paper (as opposed to the typical three punched into letter-sized paper), so you can easily fold up the pages to store them in a three-ring binder alongside your regular-sized items.

In addition to its revolutionary punching abilities, the Swingline ProFile has some other features that make it an appealing option for those who need a hole-punch. Swingline has made it easy to ensure your punching will be accurate because they’ve outfitted the ProFile with their EasyView alignment indicators. These signals turn from red to green to let you know when your document is properly aligned for punching. The ProFile’s handle locks in the “down” position, so you can store it even in cramped conditions, and the handle is soft to the touch, allowing for comfortable punching. This hole punch also comes with a hinged chip tray for easy emptying. Swingline offers a performance guarantee on the ProFile, as well as a limited lifetime warranty, so you should be more than satisfied with this hole punch, especially since it’s available for less than 0.00.

The Swingline ProFile does have a couple of minor drawbacks. First, it lacks the ability to produce a two-hole design, so this punch isn’t for people who need that particular punching pattern. It’s also disappointing that the ProFile has a low punching capacity for legal-sized paper. It would probably be arduous to use this punch to prepare a lengthy, legal-sized document for binding, so if that’s a concern for you, you may want to consider other hole punches.

It’s not very common to see four-hole punches on the market, which helps make the Swingline ProFile a breath of fresh air. The ability to punch letter- and legal-sized documents with the same punch is a pretty nifty feature, but it would have been nice if you could punch more than five legal-sized sheets at a time. Despite that, the ProFile is a welcome addition to the Swingline catalog and it offers a new way to prepare your documents for binding and filing.

If you are interested in purchasing the Swingline ProFile Hole Punch you should really check out MyBinding.com. They offer a great price on this machine and carry the full line of Swingline Hole Punches. Plus, they offer free shipping on all orders over . Check them out today!

Rhin-o-tuff Hd6500 Heavy Duty Interchangeable Die Modular Binding Punch Review

Overview:

The Rhino Tuff HD-6500 is a heavy duty interchangeable die modular binding punch that is designed for use in print shops, binderies, copy shops and large organizations.
Although this machine looks almost identical to the HD7000 there is one primary difference. This machine uses the Rhin-O-Tuff Ez Change die system which makes changing hole patterns slightly more cumbersome than the “quick change” die system offered on the HD-7000 and HD-7700 models.
However, for organizations that primarily use one type of binding or who don’t mind spending a few minutes changing the die set on their machine this punch can save users a few hundred dollars.
Apart from the difference in the die change technology, the HD-6500 is nearly identical to the HD-7000 and is a high quality heavy duty binding punch.

Strengths / Features:

The HD6500 offers the ability to punch between thirty and fifty five sheets of paper at a time depending on the hole-pattern that you are using. If you are using a three hole or Velobind die you can punch over fifty sheets. It can handle about thirty sheets of paper using a spiral coil binding die. The only punch that can handle more sheets of paper at a time is the Rhino Tuff Ultima HD-7700.
Like the HD7000 and HD7700 this punch has a full fourteen inch wide punching throat. All of the dies for this machine are fourteen inches wide and are capable of punching a legal sized sheet of paper. The HD-6500 also has an open punching throat that makes it possible to punch longer sheet sizes using a two step process. Plus, every die offers the ability to pull any of the punching pins in order to produce a custom hole-pattern.
The Rhin-O-Tuff HD6500 is a heavy duty all metal binding punch that is designed for use in high volume production environments. The case, die mechanisms, internal components and even the chip tray are all made of high quality steel and are designed for strength and durability. This machine is built to be used every day for years without the need for any maintenance. It even comes with a one year warranty on both the die and the machine.
The HD6500 allows you to bolt a plastic comb opener, wire closer or coil inserter to the top of the punch. This can help you conserve space and makes sure that your finishing equipment is always in reach when you need it. However, you also just set your finishing device on the top of the machine and then use it separately from the punch. This allows you to increase productivity by forming an assembly line with one operator punching documents while another finishes them.
The Rhino HD 6500 has a vertical punching throat that allows gravity to help ensure that your documents are aligned and flush for punching. The process of dropping your pages into the punch can help to make sure that all of your sheets are lined up and ready for punching. This can help to reduce costly punching errors, especially if the punch is being used by an inexperienced operator.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

The primary difference between this machine and the HD 7000 is the die change system. This machine is priced a few hundred dollars less because the die change system is more difficult to use. In order to change the die set on this machine you need to flip up the metal lid on the front of the machine, loosen two bolts and then slide the die out of the machine. Overall the die change process will take most users about two minutes which really isn’t too bad. However, if you do not adequately tighten the two bolts when you insert the new dieset into the machine it can cause problems. If those two bolts are not completely tight there will be movement in the dieset during the punching process which can affect the accuracy and longevity of the punch.
The HD-6500 includes many of the same features as the larger HD-7700 Ultima punch. However, in order to cut the price Rhino Tuff reduced the size of the punching motor and made the dies smaller and less durable. High volume users may want to consider paying the extra money to upgrade to the HD7700 or the GBC Magnapunch.
Like all of the Rhin-O-Tuff punches that I have tested, the HD6500 has the ability to punch a large number of sheets at one time. However, punching the maximum capacity of this machine results in a really poor punch quality. The holes in the sheets end up looking jagged and the sheets of paper become welded together. In order to avoid these punching quality problems it is necessary to reduce the number of sheets that you punch at a time to around twenty. This eliminates much of the advantage that this machine has over other modular binding punches.
The HD-6500 is an excellent binding punch for industrial applications and fits well in a print shop or production environment. However, it has an industrial look that many professional office environments do not prefer. The GBC modular binding punches have more of a professional appearance and are better suited for office environments where the punch may be placed in a public area.

Recommendation:

The HD-6500 is a high quality heavy duty modular binding punch that is a great choice for organizations that primarily use one hole pattern and only occasionally need to switch dies.
It offers a savings of a few hundred dollars over the HD-7000 which offers the same set of features but has an easier die change mechanism.
The HD6500 has a great punching capacity, heavy duty construction, a fourteen inch punching throat and comes with an awesome one year warranty.
However, this machine is not as easy to use as some of the other modular binding punches that are available on the market and does not offer the professional look that is offered by GBC.
Still, this is a great machine for an organization that is on a budget and needs a reliable heavy duty modular binding punch.

Rhin-o-tuff Hd7700 Vertical Feed Deluxe Heavy Duty Binding Punch Review

Overview:

The Rhino Tuff HD7700 is one of the largest and most durable binding punches available on the market. This punch is specifically designed for high volume users such as binderies, printers, copy shops, in-plant print shops and large organizations.

The HD7700 offers the ability to quickly change punching patterns by simply sliding out one die and sliding in the new one.

This machine is known for its rugged industrial construction and is designed for high volume production environments where productivity is essential. In fact, it offers the largest punching capacity of any modular binding punch.

On top of all of that, the HD7700 offers a number of features that are simply not offered on many other modular binding systems.

Strengths / Features:

One of the big strengths of the HD7700 is the huge punching capacity that it offers. Although Rhin-O-Tuff doesn’t publish exact punching capacities for all of the different hole-patterns, they state that it can punch an average of 45 sheets of paper across all punching patterns. Depending on the hole pattern that you are using this number will vary quite a bit. Some hole patterns such as Velobind and 3-hole will be able to handle as many as 55 sheets of paper. However, coil binding which has a large number of holes that are close together will probably only be able to handle 40 sheets. Even so, these punching capacities are impressive.

Most organizations that buy a machine like this are looking for the ability to change punching patterns quickly and easily. The Rhin-O-Tuff HD7700 uses a patented die lock system to hold the dies in place. All you need to do in order to change punching patterns is to release the two die lock levers and slide the die out of the machine. You can then slide the new dieset into the machine and lock it in place. Rhin-O-Tuff makes twelve standard dies and fourteen custom dies for this machine. This means that the HD7700 can produce almost any binding hole pattern that you would ever need.

The punching throat on the Rhino HD-7700 is fourteen inches wide. Additionally, all of the punching dies are fourteen inches on this machine. This makes handling legal sized documents a lot easier. Many other modular binding punches on the market don’t offer legal sized punching dies for many of the hole patterns used in their machines.

The construction of this machine is highly durable. It includes a heavy duty metal case that is highly durable. It also uses high quality steel punching units and internal components that are designed to remain strong in even the highest volume punching environments. Rhin-O-Tuff and its parent company Performance Design Inc. back the construction of this unit up with a one year warranty on the parts for this machine. Similar modular binding punches from GBC only have a 90 day warranty.

In addition to all of these strengths, the HD7700 also comes with a number of other great features including: a manual reverse backup to help clear potential paper jams, an extra large chip tray, an LED diagnostic display and the choice of three different punching activators.

This version of the HD7700 has a vertical punching throat. Some users prefer this style of throat as it allows them to use gravity to help align their pages in the punch. This design also allows users to bolt or set their finishing equipment on the top of the punch. However, users who don’t like a vertical binding punch can always consider the HD7700 Horizontal which offers all the same features as this machine but allows for horizontal punching.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

Much of the hype around the HD7700 surrounds its ability to punch large amounts of paper at a time. However, just because a machine can punch more paper doesn’t mean that you should use it to do that. In my tests with this machine, punching more than twenty to thirty sheets at a time greatly reduced the quality of the punching produced by the machine. Additionally, the pages began to weld together when I punched large stacks of paper. This made it difficult to turn the pages on my bound documents.

There are several comparisons between the features of this machine and the features of the GBC Magnapunch. There is no question, this machine has more features. However, features are only part of the problem. I recently had a customer take both of these machines for a test drive running jobs on each machine with the two systems side by side. The customer ended up choosing the Magnapunch because it was easier to use and helped them to complete their jobs faster. In my tests, I found the same thing.

One of the features that Rhin-O-Tuff brags about in their literature is the design of their die lock system. However, this is one of the things that I like least about this system. I found that even when I locked the die into place on this machine that there was a little bit of play in the punching mechanism. Additionally, the process for removing a punching pin is fairly tedious. This machine uses a steel retainer clip to hold the punching pins in place. This retainer clip needs to be moved out of the way in order to disengage a die. The GBC interchangeable die doesn’t have these problems.

The HD7700 is designed for industrial punching applications. However, it also has a look that is somewhat industrial. This machine fits in fine inside a production area or workshop. However, it can look a little bit out of place in an office environment.

Recommendation:

There is no doubt that the Rhino Tuff HD7700 offers a great set of features. In fact, it has a number of features that other modular binding punches simply do not offer.

It can punch more sheets, offers legal sized punching and has more die set options than any other binding punch on the market.

However, just because a machine has a lot of great features doesn’t mean that it is the best choice on the market.

Some organizations will look at this machine and determine that it is best for their specific application.

Other organizations will look at this machine and choose a machine that is easier to use but offers less features such as the GBC Magnapunch.

Choosing a 3-Hole Punch For Your Office

When you think of binding, what comes to mind? Perhaps you’re thinking about plastic comb binding machines or a gadget such as the Powis Parker Fastback, which can produce bookstore-quality documents. However, three-ring binders are also a viable binding option and they’re one of the easiest and cheapest binding methods around. All you need to get started are some three-ring binders, your document, and a hole punch. You probably already have your binders picked out, but what about your three-hole punch? This article will fill you in on what need to consider when buying a three-hole punch for your office.

There are two types of hole punches: manual and electric. You’ve probably used a manual punch at some point because they’re in just about every high school classroom in America. They’re definitely the most common type of hole punch and they also tend to be made with high-quality parts and be reasonably priced, so they’re definitely a good option. Electric hole punches can be easy to use and they can punch a lot of holes quickly, but they’re more expensive than their manual counterparts. So you’ll have to weigh your desire for speed with the limits of your budget. You want to make sure to get the most durable punch you can, so look for a punch that’s made of metal, not plastic. It’s especially important to get a punch that has steel dies, so you can get a clean punch every time.

Aside from price, punching capacity is the most important thing to consider when shopping for a three-hole punch. Punching capacities can be anywhere from just a few sheets to 30 sheets or more. If you buy a punch that can only punch a few sheets at a time and you wind up needing to bind longer documents, you’re going to get frustrated with your punch’s capacity, so get a punch with the highest punching capacity possible.

Another factor to consider is if you want a punch that has adjustable punching heads. Punches with this feature allow you to punch both two-hole and three-hole patterns, which can be a nice option to have especially if you’ll be working with non-standard binders or need to punch documents for use with file folders. Also, if you’re going to be doing a lot of punching, look for a punch that will let you replace the punching dies because they’ll grow dull and won’t be capable of punching anymore. If your punch doesn’t let you replace the dies, you’ll have to go out and buy a brand new punch so it makes financial sense to invest in a punch with replaceable dies in the first place.

There are other things you might want to think about when buying your punch, such as brand name, color, and size. However, the factors listed in this article are the most important things you need to consider when buying a three-hole punch. Now that you know what to look for when buying a three-hole punch, get one today and punching today!

If you are looking to purchase a 3-Hole Punch for your office, you should really check out MyBinding.com. They offer great prices and free shipping on a huge selection of hole punches. They also carry the entire line of Swingline 3-Hole Punches. Check it out today!

Rhin-o-tuff Hd7700 Horizontal Heavy Duty Interchangeable Die Modular Binding Punch Review

Overview:

The Rhino Tuff HD7700H takes the design and the features of the HD7700 and flips the punching mechanism for users who prefer a horizontal punching throat.
Although the machine looks a lot different from the vertical 7700 this machine includes all of the great features including the large punching capacity, chip tray, easy die change and heavy duty construction.
In fact, many users find that the HD7700-H is actually a little bit easier to use than the standard HD7700 vertical punch. Especially for operators that are used to using a horizontal feed punch such as the GBC Magnapunch or 111PM.
The HD7700 is not only easy to use but also has a huge number of features that are simply not included on other heavy duty binding punches. These help to set the HD7700 apart from its competition.

Strengths / Features:

One of the most impressive things about the HD7700H is its punching capacity. Depending on the hole-pattern that you are punching this machine can punch as many as 55 sheets of paper at one time. As a rule, the more holes that you are trying to punch at once the less sheets you can punch. Thus, this machine can punch 55 sheets of paper when punching a three-hole or Velobind hole pattern and only 40 sheets of paper when punching a 4:1 pitch spiral coil pattern. No other modular binding punch comes even close to these numbers.
The HD7700 Horizontal uses the Rhino Tuff patented quick die change technology. All you need to do in order to switch punching patterns is to release the die locks and slide the old die out of the machine, you can then slide a new die set into the slot and lock it in place. There are twelve standard dies and fourteen custom dies for the HD7700H giving you a huge selection of punching options with this machine.
Although other modular binding punches on the market offer fourteen inch punching throats, not all of their dies are fourteen inches wide. However, with the 7700H all of the dies are fourteen inches wide. This means that you can punch legal sized sheets of paper in one step. Plus, the open throat on this machine allows you to punch longer sheets using a two step punching process.
The horizontal design of the HD7700-H makes this punch simple to use and easy to load. For years many of the largest and highest quality binding punches have been horizontal and many experienced operators have come to prefer this orientation. This machine comes standard with a foot pedal to operate the punch. However, users can order a versa switch for paper activated punching or a palm switch for push button punching.
When it comes to construction, the HD7700H sets the standard for heavy duty punches. The case, internal components, die set and even the chip tray are made of heavy duty steel and other metal alloys. This machine is designed to be used every day in a high volume print shop or bindery without having any problems. The HD-7700H comes with a one year warranty on both the die set and the machine which shows just how confident that Rhino is in their equipment.
On top of all of these features I have already listed there are a number of other great things that help to set this machine apart from its completion. It has an extra large chip tray and a manual reverse feature to help clear paper jams. It even has an LED display to tell you if your die isn’t loaded correctly.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

One of the weaknesses of this machine is simply its size. In order to convert the HD7700 into a horizontal punch without completely redesigning it Rhino simply flipped the existing machine on its end and attached it to a heavy duty base. The resulting machine is massive. It weighs over one hundred pounds and measures 21″ x 21″ x 19″. This is a big machine.
The big claim to fame of the HD7700H is that it can punch more paper than any other punch on the market. However in my tests, the punching quality was extremely poor when I tried to punch the maximum capacity of this machine. The holes were ragged and the sheets of paper became welded together from the extreme force that was exerted to punch the holes. In some cases the paper even buckled between the holes. In order to achieve a good punch quality I had to punch half or less of the maximum. This was disappointing especially for a machine that is often used to create jobs that customers pay a great deal of money for.
The HD7700H is an industrial punching solution and as such it has a look that is industrial. This is fine for a print shop, bindery or production floor. However, this machine will have a tendency to stick out like a sore thumb in an office environment. If you are concerned with asthetics and noise you will want to find a place in your office that is out of the public eye to place this machine.
When Rhin-O-Tuff turned the HD7700 on its end and made it into a horizontal punch they ruined several of the features of the machine. The vertical model can be combined with an auto feed system to become a semi-automatic punch, the horizontal cannot. Likewise, the vertical model is designed to have pieces of finishing equipment or a die rack attached to the top of the machine. The horizontal isn’t designed for this. Your finishing equipment will have to have its own place on your countertop or work area.
In comparing this machine to the GBC Magnapunch (its major competitor) there is no question that this machine has more features. However, the Magnapunch has a faster punching cycle, a sleeker design and most of my customers prefer using it to this machine. They find it easier to use, easier to change the dies and less complicated than this machine.

Recommendation:

The HD7700-Horizontal binding punch is a great fit for high volume printers, binderies, copy shops and other organizations that are looking for a feature rich binding machine that can punch a lot of paper at one time.
It has a legal sized punching throat, a huge assortment of dies and is one of the best built binding punches that is available on the market.
The HD7700H is built for high volume users who prefer a horizontal punch and want an extremely durable punching machine.
However, users who are concerned about punching quality, space issues and appearance may want to consider the GBC Magnapunch as an alternative to this machine. The Magnapunch is faster, easier to use and has long been the standard for heavy duty modular binding punches.
